Our Work in Uganda

Workaid has been supporting projects in Uganda since 1987. We have sent a total of twenty 10-tonne containers full of refurbished tools and equipment as of the end of 2012. Although significant progress has been made in recent years, Uganda is still suffering from the effects of the HIV/Aids epidemic. This left thousands of orphans, some being cared for by older siblings in child-headed households.

Devastating periods of military rule have created yet more problems and now a quarter of the population is living below the poverty line on less than $2 a day. This has left many thousands of orphans, some being cared for by older siblings as young as 9 or 10 in child-headed families.

Workaid has supported a wide range of projects throughout the country. Vocational training institutes, women’s groups, disabled groups and ex-prisoners have all benefitted from Workaid tools and equipment.

Update (Dec 2021)

Our last container to Uganda was shipped in mid-summer 2021. Amongst the tools that were included were 75 mechanics kits, 88 sewing machines and 25 masonry kits which will be divided up and support 26 different training projects.
