Container Gavin
Container Gavin was named by Robin, one of our long-serving volunteers. Over the past 18 years, he has dedicated his time to Workaid.
Robin and his wife, Janice, married in 1965 and have been together ever since. They moved to Chesham 10 years ago and have two children, Gavin and Louise, who live in Australia.
Robin named the container after their eldest son, Gavin, who studied land management in the UK before becoming a police officer and moving to Australia where he lives currently, with his wife and two daughters.

Despite the distance, Robin and Gavin stay in regular contact (when the Wi-Fi cooperates) and Robin looks forward to their calls. Robin has visited his son and grandchildren on various occasions and Gavin is set to come to the UK later this year.
The container is scheduled to depart a day earlier than expected, heading from our workshop in Chesham to Uganda on April 29th, 2025.
After finishing grammar school at 17, Robin undertook a 5-year engineering apprenticeship. He worked as a shipbuilding and train repairman before joining Kodak as a draftsman, where he spent 30 years in various roles, including being a technician.
In his last few years at Kodak, Robin returned to the drawing office and was given the opportunity to become a senior member of staff which he accepted. During this role, he was assigned a personal apprentice called John, whom he got along well with for the 3 years they worked together. After leaving Kodak, Robin worked briefly for John before once again becoming a draftsman.
In his later life, Robin got a job similar to his brother’s, as a community service supervisor where he checked up on people who were on probation. He then became an officer himself and carried out site visits.

Robin discovered Workaid during his retirement. He joined when the organisation was based in Amersham and helped renovate The Old Boot Factory by helping give it a fresh coat of paint.
He used to collect knitting machines but now comes in one day a week to work on the machines themselves.
Robin shares, “everyone at Workaid is pleasant and life is so much more enjoyable when you work with people you like.”
Robin’s motivation for volunteering reflects Workaid’s mission: to enable young people in Africa to build sustainable livelihoods and escape poverty.
The container consists of 712 kits and 675 boxes of tools to go to projects in Uganda.
