Meet Godfrey

Godfrey completed his training in carpentry at the end of 2022 from Albert Valley Institute of Vocational Studies. Prior to his training course, Godfrey left school with no qualifications and his only income was from subsistence farming, barely producing enough to eat. Sadly, his wife died and Godfrey, still a teenager himself, was left to care for their young children. He decided to learn a trade in order to better provide for his children.

Godfrey was delighted to discover he had a natural talent for the trade. Gaining vocational skills was life-changing for him.

Shortly after graduating, Workaid gave him a carpentry tool kit which included over one hundred and fifty essential tools, including a toolbox, tape measure, saws and planes etc, everything he needed to start his business.

He is now a very skilled craftsman producing bedframes, chairs and cupboards, creating intricate carvings in the frames. His business is doing well and employs a trainee and besides teaching carpentry skills he also provides food and soap for him to wash his hands after work.

He can now afford to send his children to school and he hopes that in 5 years’ he will have a bigger workshop and a plot of land to build a house on for his family.
