Roy – Sewing Machine Maintenance Course Instructor
Roy is a Zimbabwean national who operates a small sewing machine repair shop in Lusaka, Zambia with two other technicians. He completed a diploma in sewing machine repair and maintenance in Harare, Zimbabwe, where the course is highly regarded.
Roy is the lead instructor for the intensive sewing machine maintenance training course Workaid supports for secondary school tailoring teachers in Kabwe, Zambia. He takes his time when interacting with the students and they appreciate his kind and compassionate manner.
By learning how to repair sewing machines, secondary school teachers can bring these skills back to their schools and extend the life of existing machines.
In addition to sewing machine maintenance, Roy teaches how to make and assemble industrial sewing machine tables and treadles.
A number of Bernina sewing machines were also provided by Workaid to the Kabwe workshop. These machines are not normally found in Zambia, but since we had a large number donated, we sent them to Roy, who was happy to work on them. A supply of spare parts will be sent to the workshop.
Roy admits that he has a weakness when it comes to teaching the theoretical aspect of maintenance, due to his very hands-on approach. Workaid have agreed to help him produce written hand-outs for his future students.
He has taught numerous secondary school teachers including Winnie Siamichelo and Bertha Banda Mtonga, who are keen to take the skills they have learnt back to their schools.
Roy is incredibly enthusiastic about Workaid’s plans to establish a sewing machine service and training centre and is looking forward to being involved.
