Bernadetta Deogratis

Bernadetta comes from Bariadi town in Simiu region of Tanzania. She is one of 20 young people attending an intensive training course in sewing machine maintenance and repair at Kalwande.

In the three countries we work in, this particular type of course is extremely popular as there are not many people able to properly maintain and repair both manual and electric sewing machines. The practical skills taught in this course are vital for tailors and small businesses alike.

She currently works as a tailor in a small group and lives at home with her parents. Her daily work includes repairing clothes and making skirts and dresses for local customers.

When asked why she had wanted to attend the course, Bernadetta responded:

“It would give me the skills to maintain my own machine and I would be able to make some money fixing other people’s machines as there was no one else in my area with these skills”
